A TEENAGE driver has died in a fiery crash on a quiet suburban street in Adelaide’s south.

The Morphett Vale man, 19, was killed instantly when the silver Toyota Camry slammed into a large gum tree at the T-junction of Newton Ave and Beverly St about 8.45pm Thursday.

Major Crash investigators are still trying to determine whether the fatal crash was an accident or suicide, however the official road toll for 2017 stands at 100.

Neighbours said the man had driven up Newton Ave several times at high speed before the crash and was sounding his horn moments before the fatal impact.

The car was covered by a tarpaulin as residents from surrounding houses remained at the edges of the police cordon.

Concerned locals are believed to have rushed to the scene to try to extinguish the fire before emergency services arrived.

Major Crash Investigators examined the scene and trying to establish the identity of the man whose body remained in the car for some time.

Investigators focused their efforts on tyre marks leading up to the crash and down the eastern end of the street.

They remained at the scene until the early hours of the morning before both the car and the body were removed.

Locals said the long straight street was known as a location for high-speed driving.

The death takes the state’s road toll to 100 compared with 84 at the same time last year.
