The principal of a northern suburbs primary school has died after crashing into a tree in Strathalbyn on his way to work.

Playford Primary principal Dean Clark, 49, died at the scene on Alexandrina Rd, near Giles Creek Rd, early Monday morning.

The Education Department said the school community was “shocked and devastated”.

“Dean Clark was tragically killed in a vehicle accident on his way to work this morning,” education director Tim Wilson said.

“Deepest sympathies go out to Mr Clark’s family and friends. Professional counselling and support services are being made available for students and staff.”

Emergency services were called about 6.15am after reports a Mitsubishi Outlander 4WD had slammed headfirst into a tree.

Mr Clark could not be revived.

The fatality comes two weeks after two Eastern Fleurieu School students, teen sweethearts, died on Long Valley Rd, just north of Strathalbyn – about a 15-minute drive from Monday’s crash site.

Alexandrina Mayor Keith Parkes said he would again confront the State Government and lobby for roads in the area be upgraded.

“We’ve been asking for years, writing to the Government about Long Valley Rd and Alexandrina Rd,” Mr Parkes told The Advertiser.

“They’ve got to understand the use of the road has changed, (it) is one of the main tourist roads in and out of the Fleurieu Peninsula (and) has a lot of sharp corners in it.

Mr Parkes said the Fleurieu Peninsula was the most popular tourist destination in SA outside of Adelaide and traffic would be overwhelming during school holidays.

The state's road toll is now 73, compared to 92 at the same time last year.
