AN actor has been refused bail over allegations he bit off “large portions” of another man’s ears during a drunken assault.

Bruce Roland Carter, 36, of Murray Bridge, faced the Adelaide Magistrates Court on Wednesday.

He has yet to plead to one count each of causing serious harm to another person, aggravated assault of a police officer and driving with excess blood alcohol.

Martin Kirby, prosecuting, told the court the charges related to an alleged incident at Murray Bridge in September.

He said a local resident “heard noises, like a car crashing” outside his home, in a nearby paddock, called 000 and was told to check on the driver’s condition.

Mr Kirby said Carter was behind the wheel of the car and “was angry”.

“Carter rushed the complainant, punched him in the face, put him in a headlock and bit off large portions of both of the complainant’s ears,” he said.

“He continued to punch the complainant to his torso and told him he would kill him.”

Mr Kirby said police attended and, while restraining Carter for transport, one officer “was struck to the left of his forehead”.

Subsequent testing, he said, revealed Carter had a blood-alcohol level of 0.128.

He asked Carter be refused bail, saying he had a history of violent offending and was on bail at the time of the incident for “a similar assault”.

Counsel for Carter asked he be released under strict home detention bail conditions to live with his grandmother.

They said he “works as an actor” and, if allowed to remain in the community, would be able to access alcohol and psychological counselling.

Magistrate Greg Fisher refused bail, saying the alleged offending was too serious, and remanded Carter in custody until January.
