A MURDER charge has been dropped against a man after he claimed he acted in self-defence during an allegedly drug-related row in Adelaide’s north last year.
In the Adelaide Magistrates Court on Friday, prosecutors formally withdrew their case against Daniel Robert Bampton, 34, who had been accused of killing Salisbury North father Ashley White, 38.
No details were given to court about why the case was withdrawn.
Bampton’s lawyers had previously suggested Bampton acted in self-defence after Mr White was alleged to have entered an unlocked Andrews Farm house brandishing an axe and moving to attack him.
The court last year heard Bampton fatally stabbed Mr White during a scuffle at the Mendota Ave property just before midnight on June 18, 2016.
Prosecutors said Mr White died during the row — which police had alleged was drug-related.
Bampton’s identity can be revealed after Magistrate Jayanthi McGrath revoked secrecy orders banning publication of his identity as she formally dismissed the prosecution.
He was being released from jail on Friday.
Bampton was initially refused bail but was subsequently released on the condition he reside at Andrews Farm under home detention.
Mr White’s distressed relatives, including his mother, watched in the public gallery but declined to comment outside court.
