Seaton hair salon fire linked to bikie crime spree, police say

A hair salon in Adelaide's west has been targeted in an arson attack that police say is linked to a bikie crime spree, which includes two other fires and a shooting in Ascot Park.

A hair salon in Adelaide's west has been gutted in an early-morning arson attack that police say is linked to a bikie crime spree.

The fire broke out on Clark Tce in Seaton just before 5am today.

The blaze was contained in just ten minutes, with firefighters protecting two adjacent businesses.

No one was injured, but the fire caused an estimated $25,000 damage to the salon.

Police confirmed the incident is linked with recent bikie attacks, including fires at a gym in Marleston and a food van in Mile End.

It is also linked to a recent shooting in Ascot Park.

Police temporarily closed Clark Tce between Mitchell St West and Tapleys Hill Rd as investigators examined the scene.

NSW Police Commissioner speaks to media

NSW Police Commissioner Mick Fuller has spoken to the media about the knife attack in Sydney yesterday.

Here's what he had to say:

"What he has on social media, what we may well find in his bedroom will hopefully give us, and shine more light on why this crime happened."

"We will try to interview him as soon as he's released from hospital."

$40m for SA hyrdro project

Three projects in the Upper Spencer Gulf will compete for $40 million in federal funding to accelerate South Australia’s first pumped hydro operation.

The energy storage projects will be assessed on which can provide the most impact on reducing prices and improving reliability in the electricity grid.

NSW open to ban on sex selection abortions

NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian has opened the door to explicitly banning abortions based on gender if it will help ease community concerns.

Some MPs – including coalition ministers – raised the issue during debate on draft laws to decriminalise abortions in NSW.

The private members' bill, which passed the lower house last week, will be examined by a parliamentary committee before being considered in the upper house.

Firefighters rushed to the home on Sextant Ave in Seaford just before 6am today and contained the blaze within ten minutes, protecting a nearby home.

The collective damage bill is estimated at $150,000. 

Police investigators will attend the scene this morning to determine the cause of the blaze.

In a separate incident, a house and car in Adelaide's south have been destroyed by fire this morning.

Firefighters rushed to the home on Sextant Ave in Seaford just before 6am today and contained the blaze within ten minutes, protecting a nearby home.

The collective damage bill is estimated at $150,000. 

Police investigators will attend the scene this morning to determine the cause of the blaze.

Motorists risk lives at level crossings

Motorists are increasingly dicing with death by trying to beat trains at level crossings, new figures reveal.

In the past two years the number of motorists detected by cameras at fixed rail crossings has increased by 70 per cent from 1240 to 2050.

Victorian clergy pressured to report abuse

Priests will be compelled to break the seal of the confessional and report admissions of child abuse under news laws being introduced in Victoria.

The laws, introduced into parliament on Wednesday, will make religious ministries mandatory reporters of abuse suspicions, alongside police, teachers, medical practitioners and early childhood workers.

Epstein's guards axed from jobs

The warden at the federal jail where Jeffrey Epstein took his own life over the weekend has been removed.

Meanwhile, the two guards who were supposed to be watching the financier were placed on leave while authorities investigate the death.

Payouts for victims of child abuse

At least a dozen South Australian victims of sexual abuse have been awarded payouts from the National Redress Scheme in its first year, figures show.

Official figures obtained by The Advertiser show that 229 victims of institutional child sex abuse in SA have applied for compensation through the Commonwealth scheme.
