A MAN who allegedly tried to pull his girlfriend into the path of an oncoming train has been granted bail, with a judge citing his need for urgent psychological intervention.
On Tuesday, the Supreme Court released Lucas Gary Narkle on strict home detention bail, ordering he be monitored at all times and undergo immediate mental health treatment.
Narkle, 18, has yet to plead to one count of attempted murder.
It is alleged that, in October, he tried to pull his girlfriend into the path of a train at a northern suburbs station.
The incident was captured by CCTV, leading to Narkle’s arrest.
On Tuesday, counsel for Narkle said he had undergone psychological assessment and found to be without mental impairment, meaning he was fit to stand trial.
However, doctors also noted he was suffering from unresolved grief, anger and impulse control issues that required “weekly treatment for the next one to three years”.
Counsel said Narkle could not access such treatment while in the prison system.
Prosecutors opposed Narkle’s release, saying his lack of mental impairment rendered him a greater danger to the community as his actions lacked explanation.
Justice Anne Bampton spoke directly to Narkle, via video link, asking if he would be prepared to “absolutely comply” with his bail conditions should he be released.
“Yes I will, Your Honour ... treatment would benefit me because, in jail, there’s very limited programs,” he replied.
“I want to move forward not backward ... I’ve had a lot of time to think about it and sort my life out.”
Justice Bampton released Narkle on home detention bail, further banning him from contacting his girlfriend.
“If this is to be a turning point for you, if I’m going to give you this opportunity, you must comply absolutely with the conditions,” she said.
“These matters are always borderline but, given you’ve been in custody for 3 ½ months, your age and your urgent need to psychological intervention, I will grant bail.”
Narkle will face the Adelaide Magistrates Court on a date to be set.
