WORKERS from a Glenelg butcher’s shop and the business next door have escaped unharmed after fire broke out there in the early hours of Saturday morning.

Emergency services were called to Brian’s Gourmet Butcher, on Jetty Rd at Glenelg, after reports the shop was ablaze just before 5am on Saturday.

The MFS rushed to the scene to find the front service area on fire.

It took about five minutes to fully extinguish the blaze.

Two people from the business, and three others from Bakers Delight next door, evacuated before crews arrived and were unharmed.

The Advertiser understands the two workers were out the back preparing the meat cuts when someone entered through the unlocked front door and set the place alight.

Caruso’s Fresh Foods owner Rocco Caruso said he and some of his staff were at his fruit and vegetable shop — two doors down from the butcher — when the fire started but did not hear anything.

“We opened the front door and there’s fire engines everywhere,” Mr Caruso said.

He said he felt for the owner as it would be “pretty hard to take”.

“Who knows how long it is going to take for them to get back to business,” he said.

“I’ve got red meat in this morning — I rang up my butcher mate and said, ‘give me some meat mate, we’ll start selling meat’.

“I mean we sell small goods so I thought we may as well get some red meat in for the people who do want it.”

An MFS spokeswoman said the damage to the butcher shop was estimated at $40,000.

Fire cause investigators will be at the scene today.
