Ex-scout master Anthony Allan Munro jailed for ‘repulsively evil’ abuse of boys from 1965 to 1983

A PAEDOPHILE former scout master, who has been questioned by police over the Beaumont children abduction, will serve at least five years’ jail for his “repulsively evil” crimes against two boys.

A PAEDOPHILE former scout master, who has been questioned by police over the Beaumont children abduction, will serve at least five years’ jail for his “repulsively evil” crimes against two boys.

However, one of Anthony Allan Munro’s victims has vowed he will “never leave prison”, saying he has new evidence linking him to the infamous Adelaide cold case.

Outside the District Court on Tuesday, Andrew McIntyre — who gave The Advertiser permission to identify him — expressed disappointment with Munro’s non-parole period.

“We do the best we can, but Anthony Munro has not received anywhere near the sentence that he should have,” he said.

“You can take it from me that he’s never going to leave prison, that he will die in prison.

“There is further evidence that has been submitted to (SA Police’s) Major Crime (Section) that links him to the abduction and murder of the Beaumont children.”

Police have previously said there is no evidence linking Munro to the high-profile disappearance of the children — aged 9, 7 and 4.

Munro, 72, pleaded guilty to 10 child sex offences committed against Mr McIntyre and another boy between 1965 and 1983.

Last year, he returned to Adelaide from Cambodia to answer the charges, and was spoken to by police about the Beaumont children’s disappearance.

In sentencing, Judge Paul Slattery said Munro “violently and repeatedly” abused the boys on camps, in tents, in station wagons and in spare rooms, even videotaping one of his acts.

“You committed a gross breach of trust ... to sexually gratify yourself,” he said.

“You groomed both boys by making them financial offers and leisure benefits ... you knew of the poor circumstances of their families compared with your own.

“You exploited that by offering inducements to the victims that you knew their parents could not afford, and could never match.

“This was predatory conduct ... their lives have been forever compromised by the repulsively evil acts you perpetrated upon them.”

Judge Slattery noted Munro’s formal apology, and payment of compensation, to both victims saying it showed “at least some contrition and remorse”.

He said he would have jailed Munro for 18 years, if not for his guilty pleas, and imposed a 10-year sentence with a five-year, five-month non-parole period.

Outside court, Munro’s former brother-in-law, Barry Barber, said the family now viewed him “as a non-entity”.

“If there’s other victims out there, I would encourage them to come forward — they should be heard,” he said.

“A lot can happen between now and when his parole comes up.”

Mr McIntyre said he was interviewed by Major Crime detectives on Monday, and called the appointment “quite successful”.

He said he had declined to seek a restraining order against Munro.
