Daniel White jailed for cutting three-year-old boy’s throat with knife

A MAN who cut a three-year-old boy’s throat with a knife, after writing a note about his desire for him to be decapitated, has been sentenced to at least two years’ jail.

But with time already served he is now eligible for parole.

Daniel White, 29, was charged with one count of aggravated causing harm with intent to cause harm and one count of assault causing harm after a sickening attack on a boy in Brahma Lodge on March 3, 2016.

He pleaded guilty to both charges.

During his sentencing hearing in the District Court last Monday, Judge Susanne Cole described the attack as “violent, unprovoked, frightening”.

The court heard White was living in a granny flat behind a house in which the boy and his mother lived.

“(The mother) saw you approach (the boy), push him to the floor and get on top of him,” Judge Cole said.

“She saw you making motions with the (serrated) knife as if to cut (the boy’s) throat.

“(She) pushed you away from (the boy) at which point you punched her to the left side of the face twice and pushed her to the ground.

“You began again to cut (the boy) with the knife.”

The ordeal ended when the mother grabbed her son and ran to another part of the house, the court was told. White fled and was later arrested.

“Later that day, a number of notes were found in the granny flat ... The relevant note said ‘I wish for (the boy’s) ... head to be removed instantly’,” Judge Cole said.

The boy sustained “a number of cuts of varying depths” to both sides of his face and throat as well as injuries to his mouth and lips.

During sentencing, Judge Cole noted White, who had a history of abusing illicit drugs, had not expressed remorse or apologised during the court proceedings.

He was sentenced to three years and 10 months in jail, with a non-parole period of two years, backdated to when he was taken into custody on March 3, 2016 — meaning he was eligible for parole from Saturday.

Judge Cole also imposed an intervention order on White, prohibiting him from being within 100m of the boy and his mother.
