A SMUGGLER of Japanese child exploitation material, who wanted to live 200m from a top girls school, has told a court he has found a new address — 250m from a kindergarten.

Alexander Anh Nguyen Tran — caught with images of children as young as three — wants to serve his inevitable jail term on home detention at Broadview.

Federal prosecutors on Friday told the District Court they did not object to Tran’s new address, confident that technology would safeguard nearby children.

“We submit the court may find that residence suitable ... it’s 250m from a kindergarten, but that’s located in a different street,” prosecutor Pantelia Marinakis said.

“We accept it’s unlikely kindergarten-age children will be walking past the residence unaccompanied.

“We submit Tran will be unable to reach the boundaries of the kindergarten without his home detention bracelet activating, and an alarm sounding.”

Tran, 32, is awaiting sentence for attempting to smuggle, and lying on his incoming passenger card about, six hard drives filled with child exploitation material.

He collected the files while working as a kindergarten teacher in Japan to rebel against his parents’ wishes he become a pharmacist.

Tran has been living at Medindie since his arrest, 200m away from Wilderness School — which was unaware of his presence until it was reported by The Advertiser.

It was only after the story was published that prosecutors moved to block Tran from serving his sentence on home detention at that address.

Last week, Tim Dibden, for Tran, told the court his client’s parents were buying a new house for him at Broadview.

On Friday, he asked the court order a home detention suitability report — and promised Tran would also undergo a risk assessment process conducted by a mental health expert.

Judge Liesl Chapman said both reports were necessary and remanded Tran on continuing bail — to the Medindie address — until April.
