A RECENTLY laid water pipe has burst and sprayed thousands of litres of water onto a nearby house for almost an hour before it was shut off.

The house on Robson Rd in Hectorville was bombarded with water after the pipe ruptured about 5pm on Tuesday.

The water was not isolated until about 6pm.

Neighbour David Watts came home to find the street awash and the house being buffeted by the water main spray.

He said crews had been replacing pipes on the street for weeks and had only recently replaced the infrastructure where the pipe burst.

“It is a pretty old street,” Mr Watts said.

“We have had our fair share of bursts. They were laying new pipes this week.

“Unfortunately it looks like it was just new infrastructure gone wrong.”

Mr Watts said crews were scrambling to shut the pressure off but had to find and shut off seven valves to finally halt the flow.

The scale of damage to the house is currently unknown. State Emergency Service volunteers are helping to mop up.
