The body of a Victorian teenager missing at sea for four days has been retrieved by police at a dangerous surf beach on South Australia’s Fleurieu Peninsula.
A water operations unit recovered 17-year-old Arash Yari in choppy water just off Parsons Beach after a helicopter spotted the Victorian boy about 10.15am on Friday.
Arash went missing in the surf about 12.30pm on Tuesday after entering the water with a friend to cool off during a fishing trip.
The pair was sucked out to sea in a fierce rip but Arash’s friend, 20-year-old Norwegian Nimatllah Rafiq Ali, made it back to shore.
Another man who jumped in to save the boys was also caught in a rip. He was eventually rescued by surfer Gethyn Singleton, 51, about 600m offshore at nearby Waitpinga Beach.
Arash’s devastated family told The Advertiser yesterday they would camp out on the Parsons Beach cliff face until their “lovely boy” was returned to them.
The family had fled war-torn Afghanistan and settled in Sunshine West, about 15km west of Melbourne, last year.
Victor Harbor police will prepare a report for the Coroner.
