Baby rescued from hot car at a Gepps Cross car park

Public service announcement: Never leave children or animals in hot cars. Police have freed a baby in a car park just this morning.

Summer Weather: The heat is on across Australia

A baby has been rescued from a hot car at a Gepps Cross car park as Adelaide soars above 30C.

Police were called just before 11.30am on Wednesday, receiving reports a baby was in obvious distress in a parked car.

A traffic officer and a police dog handler arrived within minutes and tried breaking into the car.

The parent was tracked down and the child was freed from the hot car. The temperature in Adelaide was 31.1C at the time.

The baby was taken to the Women’s and Children’s Hospital as a precaution.

Police urged parents not to leave children in cars, which can put kids and pets at risk of heat-related illness or even death.

“Just cracking the window is not enough, and don’t think it’ll be okay ‘just for a minute’,” a police spokesman said.

Anyone concerned for the welfare of a child or animal in a hot car is encouraged to ring the police assistance line on 131 444 or triple-0 in an emergency and seek advice.
