TWO young men who bribed a corrupt driving instructor for a licence have been warned, by a judge, not to further “damage” themselves or their families with more criminal acts.

Abdul Kajani and Ethan Quadros were yesterday convicted of bribery and corruption offences, and sentenced to four months’ jail.

However, District Court Judge Michael Boylan ruled there was sufficient reason to suspend those terms on condition of 18-month, $500 good behaviour bonds.

He warned them not to take the court’s leniency lightly.

“You have done enough damage to yourselves and your families already,” he said.

Kajani, 22, of Kilburn and Quadros, 24, of Adelaide, pleaded guilty to one count each of bribing a public officer and dishonestly dealing with documents.

In September last year, Quadros paid driving instructor Jawad Joe Dimachki $450 to issue a licence to Kajani.

Kajani and Dimachki never met, and Kajani never sat a test – he was, he claimed, too “nervous” and “afraid of failure” to do so.

Quadros, whose own licence had been certified by Dimachki years earlier, claimed he wanted to spare his friend further anxiety.

The duo were just two clients of Dimachki’s unlawful practices – he has pleaded guilty to multiple corruption offences and is yet to be sentenced.

In sentencing on Friday, Judge Boylan said he accepted the duo had told the truth about the reasons for their offending, and that crime was “out of character” for them.

“Our society simply cannot tolerate corruption of public officials – it can become a cancer on our system of government,” he said.

“Further, others minded to commit such offences may well be incompetent drivers who could pose a threat to the safety of our community.”
