The Tasmania JackJumpers remain hopeful of re-signing star import Milton Doyle as negotiations over a new contract continue.

Doyle is currently playing in Puerto Rico with his future with the JackJumpers still up in the air as the club seeks to extend a three-year relationship which included the 2024 championship.

This masthead has previously reported “half the league is keen on the talented two-guard with Melbourne United (coach) Dean Vickerman a long-time fan”.

Earlier this week, the JackJumpers unveiled American David Johnson as its first import for next season. He replaces Jordon Crawford who has departed the club.

JackJumpers’ chief operating officer Darren Smith said conversations are ongoing with Doyle.

“I wouldn’t assume it is Milton (the club’s second import). We are definitely deep in conversation with him and keen to see how that negotiation goes over the coming weeks,” Smith said.

“We have been talking to Milton for some time, he is in the middle of a season at Puerto Rico, so he has that to think about and a range of other things with his family.

“They are positive conversations but these things take time and we’re in no rush but we will have to consider other options as well.

“Because if in case that doesn’t happen then we have to be prepared to make sure we have the right person for the role.

“One more import spot to fill and I am sure it will be exciting no matter who it is.”

Smith said he was excited about the potential of former Toronto Raptors guard Johnson.

“If you look at his resume, it’s pretty exciting what he has been able to do throughout college and into his pro career in the G-League as a dynamic scoring wing,” Smith said.

“We think it was kind of a need for us to try and get a little bit more athletic and younger.

“So we think it fills a nice hole for us.”

Meanwhile, emerging guard Nick Stoddart has been elevated to the main roster after standout performances in the NBL1 South competition with the Ballarat Miners.

“It’s exciting for us to see another development player being elevated to a roster spot and being given that opportunity and he deserves it,” Smith said.

“His worked really, really hard the last couple of years and has shown a lot last season for us when he played.

“He has continued that in the NBL1 level and we are really pleased to have him join the team as a rostered spot and look forward him to producing as he did last year.”

The JackJumpers now have one roster spot remaining.
