Whiskey Legion arrests 89 people on 185 charges on Gold Coast in first 48 hours

A crime crackdown which has seen extra police flood the Gold Coast has netted more than 80 arrests in its first two days. Read who police have busted including a whopping 1600 driver checks.

Police have arrested almost two people every hour on the Gold Coast in the first two days of a week-long crime crackdown aimed at increasing community safety.

Operation Whiskey Legion has seen 89 people charged with 185 offences since the the region was saturated with extra officers on Wednesday as part of the high visibility blitz.

Roadside random testing has surged as well with more than 1600 drivers checked in 48-hours.

As part of the operation, officers executed a search warrant at a home in Gatina Crescent, Coomera where they found cocaine and methamphetamines. During a search of a vehicle at the address it’s alleged police also found a shortened .22 calibre bolt-action rifle and a shotgun shell.

A 46-year-old man was charged with drugs and firearms offences. He’ll face Southport Magistrates Court on March 18.

During their patrols, officers attached to the operation intercepted a Nissan X-Trail on Kortana Dr, Nerang. A search of the vehicle allegedly uncovered an axe and a knife.

A 27-year-old Loganlea man has been charged with two counts of possessing a weapon, providing a false name, and driving unlicensed. He’ll face Southport Magistrates Court on March 6.

Gold Coast Acting Chief Superintendent Peter Miles said the police enforcement had a strong focus on victims of crime.
“We know the devastating impact crime can have on victims,” Chief Supt Miles said.

“Which is why we are not only focused on enforcement but also on engaging with victims to ensure they feel supported and kept informed throughout the investigative process.

“Operation Whiskey Legion is about sending a clear message that crime will not be tolerated on the Gold Coast.”

The operation will wrap-up on March 5.
