A 47-year-old man suspected of discharging a shotgun into the back of Linley Anyos at Tallebudgera earlier this month has been arrested interstate on unrelated weapons charges, although local law enforcement believe it could be years before his extradition is possible.
On Monday, Detective Inspector Mark Mooney confirmed the Queensland man was arrested in Melbourne recently following an operation by the Victoria Police equivalent of the Special Emergency Response Team.
Detective Inspector Mooney said the man had driven down to Victoria, where he maintains some ties, at some unspecified point since the January 8 shooting, which left Ms Anyos clinging to life in Gold Coast University Hospital’s intensive care unit (ICU).
“The male is now under restraint in Victoria. During the week, investigators from the Gold Coast CIB [criminal investigation branch] attended and spoke with him, and also interviewed some further witnesses.”
Detective Inspector Mooney said local investigators would seek to extradite the 47-year-old “at some point in time”, however an arrest warrant was yet to be taken out as “we believe he will be under restraint for a couple of years down there, but obviously that’s subject to the outcomes in the Victorian courts”.
“I don’t know his history in Victoria, I’m just surmising that from the offences that [allegedly] occurred.”
In a statement, Victoria Police confirmed they had arrested the man on January 12 at Tullamarine in possession of what they claimed to be an imitation firearm.
“Officers responded to reports of a man holding a firearm at a service station on Glenroy Rd in Glenroy about 6.45pm,” a spokeswoman said.
“The man fled the scene in a black Mitsubishi Lancer, travelling on Pascoe Vale Rd.
“It will be alleged that the offender pointed the firearm at a passing motorist.
“Police spotted the Mitsubishi driving erratically before it pulled up at an address in Forum Pl, Tullamarine.
“Officers swiftly moved in and arrested a 47-year-old Queensland man before seizing a firearm.
“He has subsequently been charged with three counts of assault police, two counts of assault with a weapon, prohibited person possess imitation firearm, failure to give name and address and fail to render assistance after an accident.”
He has been remanded to face Broadmeadows Magistrates Court on January 28.
Gold Coast detectives were still probing whether the shooting was deliberate or accidental, although they allege after their investigations that the 47-year-old was in fact the person who brought the weapon to the scene.
Detective Inspector Mooney also revealed the weapon police allege was used in the shooting, a “modified” double-barrel shotgun, had been located in bushland near the Trees Rd, Tallebudgera crime scene with the assistance of Queensland State Emergency Service officers.
“The weapon had [allegedly] been discarded by, we believe, our POI [person of interest], although our investigations on that continue,” he said.
“The weapon has now been sent to ballistics for further examination and forensic testing.”
Detective Inspector Mooney said detectives formed the view the weapon had allegedly been dumped nearby due to the white Hino Ranger truck being driven by the suspect taking seven minutes longer to drive between two locations than the trip would have otherwise taken.
A spent cartridge was also allegedly discovered about 2m away from the weapon.
Meanwhile, Ms Anyos continues her miraculous recovery from death’s threshold.
Detective Inspector Mooney said she had now been moved from the ICU onto a ward, where she remains in a serious but stable condition.
Gold Coast CIB detectives would attempt to speak with Ms Anyos later on Monday.
“Hopefully she can shed some light on [what happened], however, due to the trauma that she’s endured she may not have any recollection of the incident at all,” Detective Inspector Mooney said.
He revealed that she had “multiple organs... or parts thereof” removed due to the ballistics trauma.
“It’s quite remarkable she’s survived her injuries,” Detective Inspector Mooney said.
“It shows the courage and strength of her that she’s been able to get through.”
Ms Anyos would, however, require lifelong treatment for the “life-altering” injuries.
