A mother of three who knocked a man out, kicked his unconscious body and watched as a co-accused dragged a woman by her hair will be released from jail in less than two weeks.
Somuhre Prime, 20, appeared via videolink from custody in the Southport Magistrates Court on Friday where she pleaded guilty to one count of common assault, unlawful use of a motor vehicle and two counts of assaults occasioning bodily harm whilst in company.
The court heard Prime and a group were involved in an incident involving a woman and two men in the carpark of the Ruby Gold Coast hotel at Surfers Paradise on April 6.
CCTV footage played in court showed Prime kicking a female victim in the stomach and head, and watching as the woman was dragged on the floor by a co-accused.
When one of the men tried to intervene Prime grabbed him by the throat and punched him in the jaw.
The male victim fell to the ground and Prime kicked him in the face, knocking him unconscious.
The court heard Prime kicked the man in the face twice more while he was unconscious then stomped on his head.
Prosecutor Erin Garland told the court a second video showed Prime high-fiving the co-accused, with a clump of the woman’s hair blowing across the pavement.
She said the woman was seen curled in a ball in a highly distressed state while the third male victim tried to bring the man on the ground back to consciousness.
It was unclear what had sparked the confrontation.
Prime’s co-accused was scheduled to be sentenced in the Southport Children’s Court on Monday.
Others in the video have not been charged or identified.
The court heard Prime also unlawfully used a car without the consent of the owner at Palm Beach between July 24-27, 2023. Prime, who was serving a suspended sentence at the time of the assault, was taken into custody on April 6.
The court heard Prime had been given six months imprisonment wholly suspended for 18 months at the Ipswich Magistrates Court in August 2024 after she punched a loss prevention officer eight times in the head outside a Kmart.
Prime’s defence lawyer, Daniel Gilbert from Gatenby Criminal Law, told the court he believed his client was genuinely remorseful for her actions and referred to a letter she had written to the court.
The court heard Prime had a troubled childhood, started using cannabis from the age of 11 and by 13 years old was taking cocaine.
Mr Gilbert told the court that on the night of the offence, Prime had been drinking and admits she has a problem with alcohol and substances.
He said Prime had been engaging with support services while in custody and had started Alcoholics Anonymous, which she planned to engage with upon her release.
He said if Prime’s parole release date was set for that same day, she would only benefit in receiving more support in the community and would be able to start her rehabilitation earlier.
He noted it was Prime’s first time in custody and first time away from her children, who she was the primary carer for.
Magistrate Dominic Brunello said the assault was done without reasonable provocation.
He noted the man knocked out by Prime landed on his back and the back of his head.
He said Prime was extremely lucky not to be before a superior court for grievous bodily harm or homicide, given one punch can kill.
He called kicking and stomping on the ground a cowardly, callous and dangerous act.
Mr Brunello took into account Prime’s youth, remorse, background and efforts for rehabilitation.
She was sentenced to 12 months in prison with the 75 days she had already spent in custody declared as time already served.
Her parole release date was fixed to July 6, 2025.
