A man has died after a car crashed into a tree near Gold Coast Airport.
Emergency services were called to the Gold Coast Hwy near Kirribin St in Bilinga just before 2pm on Wednesday.
A Queensland Ambulance Spokesperson said paramedics assessed a male patient with life-threatening injuries, but he died at the scene.
A Queensland Police Service spokesman said no-one else was injured in the incident.
Witnesses on social media said the car “exploded” and that the vehicle had been left “in half”.
“It was a complete mess. The tree was in half. There was no front of the car, just the boot,” one woman said.
Another said they “could not recognise” what they were looking at when faced with the crash.
“All I could make out was the back of what appeared to be an SUV with so many belongings on the road,” she said.
“So sad for this family.”
The southbound lanes of the highway between Surf St and George St have been closed until further notice, with motorists urged to avoid the area if possible.
The Forensic Crash Unit are investigating the circumstances of the crash and urge anyone who may have information that could assist to come forward.
