GOLD Coast police have pleaded for witnesses to come forward after a motorcyclist crashed on the M1, reducing traffic to a standstill on Thursday afternoon.

A 24-year-old Bonogin man remains in a critical condition after he lost control of his motorcycle and crashed off his bike into a barrier in the southbound lanes at Oxenford around 11.33am.

He was taken to Gold Coast University Hospital in a serious but stable condition but his condition deteriorated before being declared critical.

The Forensic Crash Unit is appealing for any witnesses or dashcam footage of the incident to come forward.

The crash caused significant traffic delays on the M1 for two hours as one lane was closed before it fully reopened by 2.30pm.

A police spokeswoman said all lanes had reopened and traffic was moving smoothly about 2.30pm Thursday.

Emergency services rushed to Oxenford about 11.33am after a motorcycle crashed into a barrier.

Paramedics, including critical care, assessed the male driver at the scene and he was taken to Gold Coast University Hospital in a serious but stable condition.
