It was not the “wily, windy moors” sung in the hit song ‘Wuthering Heights’, but the HOTA Outdoor Stage on Sunday still served as the perfect backdrop for a sea of Kate Bushes to gather and recreate the iconic dance featured in the 1978 music video of the song.

It was all for The Most Wuthering Heights Day Ever – an annual event that sees thousands across the globe dress up at Kate Bush and recreate her ‘Wuthering Heights’ music video.

The event, now in its seventh year on the Gold Coast, was attended by approximately 250 people dressed as Kate Bush, who was also known as “Wuthers” according to organiser and Lights Out and Dance founder Karleen Harrington.

“It’s such a wholesome community event,” she said. “Everyone for a day is Kate and ... it’s really really joyful.”

Lights Out and Dance hosted the event with all profits going to Friends with Dignity, a not-for-profit charity that supports domestic violence survivors.

Kanae Shibata, with her three-year-old twin daughters Scarlett and Daisy, was part of the 70 per cent of the crowd attending the Gold Coast dance event for the first time

“It was really meaningful and a nice idea,” she said. “My friend loves Kate Bush so we decided let’s do it!”

She said it was a very happy environment.

“[My daughters] liked it,” she said. “They didn’t understand the domestic violence stuff however they love dancing together and dressing up.”

The Most Wuthering Heights Day Ever was first held across the world in 2016 with countries including Canada, Germany, Denmark and Australia taking part.

The Gold Coast is just one of the many cities across Australia that takes part in the dancing event with Byron Bay and Brisbane each running their own Kate-Bush based dancing celebrations over the weekend.

At the HOTA Outdoor Stage on Sunday, the morning began with a number of dance workshops before ending with one final performance of the song and a group photo running down the hill.

“It’s an iconic song... and [Kate Bush’s] dance is so iconic,” Ms Harrington said. “The zombie walk she does in the field is just incredible and its just become something that has become the highlight of everyone’s year. They can’t wait to do it year and year again.”

“It’s just that good dose of joy and laughter, and strangers become friends doing a backwards pterodactyl.”
