Police were called to a popular park in Burleigh Heads after reports of an assault which left one man in hospital.

Emergency services descended on Memorial Park after a member of the public reported they heard fighting at around 11.15pm on Monday.

A Gold Coast police spokeswoman said when officers arrived they found one man with a “laceration” to his toe.

Paramedics were called to the scene and took the man to Gold Coast University Hospital in a stable condition.

The man has not filed a complaint to police in regards to the reported assault.

It comes as locals are calling for a permanent police beat in the area to tackle anti-social behaviour and youth crime.

The calls were amplified by a brutal attack on Australia Day when four teenagers were bashed by a gang of 30 youths near Justins Park.

On another occasion in September last year, 22-year-old Cameron Duce sadly passed away after an alleged assault while he was walking home from a night out in Burleigh Heads.

18-year-old Austin Ballard was charged with unlawful striking causing death and faced Southport Magistrates Court on October 1 but his case was adjourned to January 14. He remains on bail.
