A Queensland mother and two-time breast cancer survivor has won the Gold Coast Australian of the Year award.
Gold Coast mum Dr Robyn Cameron took out the prestigious gong, making her one of the four Gold Coasters who were honoured at the City’s annual Australian of the Year awards on Thursday night.
Dr Cameron was first diagnosed with breast cancer when she was 38 and raising her two young children aged five and eight.
“I would firstly like to say, my emotions have got me shy, but I am extremely privileged and humbled to receive this award,” she said on Thursday night.
“I am glad the lecture is here so you can’t see my legs shaking.
“I think all of us here know that an award does not represent one person.
“I sincerely mean it when I say this award represents the support I have had over 20 years from so many hundreds of people from the Gold Coast community.”
Since her diagnosis, Dr Cameron dedicated her life to raising awareness about breast cancer, in total raising more than $2 million for its research.
She is now classed as one of Australia’s largest community fundraisers for breast cancer research.
“I am passionate about breast cancer research. Why? Because I want to lessen the impact, and not just on the person diagnosed,” Dr Cameron said.
“It has such a far reaching impact to all those involved, the fathers, the mums, the grandmothers, the auntys, the daughters, the sons, the sisters and the brothers.
“I have a daughter and a granddaughter and I look forward to the day when a diagnosis of breast cancer means ‘okay go get this’ or we have a vaccine.
“But breast cancer research does take a lot of funding. It’s vital.”
Gold Coast mayor Tom Tate applauded Dr Cameron on her award and the “remarkable” contributions to the community.
“Dr Cameron has done an incredible effort with her countless hours of volunteering and advocacy work as a National Breast Cancer Foundation ambassador as well as creating the charity’s largest community fundraiser.”
