Coen Wylie was only six months old when a surgeon cut too far into his motor cortex and left him permanently disabled.
His parents were told he wouldn’t live past 18 months.
Defying the odds, Coen is about to celebrate his seventh birthday on February 19 and he only has one wish – to ride in a Lamborghini.
Coen’s mother, Helen Wylie, said fast cars and motorbikes were the one thing that made him “light up”.
“When he sees one, he laughs, smiles and is filled with pure excitement,” Ms Wylie said.
“He is a huge fan of Adrian Portelli (known as the Lambo Guy) and his cars. Watching him brings Coen so much happiness.”
Ms Wylie said each of Coen’s birthdays were a milestone that they “never take for granted”.
“It would mean the world if someone could show Coen their fast car, even for a moment,” she said.
“Seeing his face light up would be the greatest gift we could ask for.”
Ms Wylie’s life was turned upside down when Coen started having seizures at just six weeks of age.
“My husband and I lived in Starship Hospital in Auckland for nearly a year, desperately searching for answers,” she said.
“At six months old, Coen underwent a temporal occipital parietal disconnection brain surgery in the hopes of stopping his seizures.
“Tragically, the surgeon cut too far into his motor cortex, leaving him permanently disabled.
“He was the youngest child ever to undergo this procedure at that time.”
Ms Wylie said after five years of fundraising, advocating and “begging” for help, she decided to move to Australia to give “Coen a chance at a better life”.
Coen now attends the Centre of Movement in Burleigh three times a week.
“He is non-verbal and relies on a wheelchair, but he has the brightest spirit and the biggest heart,” Ms Wylie said.
“Despite everything he has been through, he is full of joy, laughter and an unbreakable love for life.”
