A Brazilian man facing a string of sexual assault charges has pleaded not guilty as a date is set for his trial.

Augusto Eidi Ito, 43, pleaded not guilty to seven sexual assault charges when he appeared in the Southport District Court on Thursday, May 15.

It has been alleged four offences took place at Southport on November 10, 2023, and three at Broadbeach the following month.

The matter had originally been listed for sentence on June 11 but Ito’s not guilty plea has meant the matter will now go to a four day trial.

The plea comes weeks after Ito initially swapped his lawyers from Guardian Criminal Law to new legal representation from Paradise Law.

While organising the trial date, Ito’s defence lawyer Craig van der Hoven told the court his client would need a Portuguese interpreter.

Judge Deborah Holliday KC asked if Ito could understand everything that had been said.

Mr van der Hoven said that Ito could but he preferred his client to have an interpreter for the purpose of a trial as Ito may be giving evidence and would be in a courtroom setting.

The trial has been scheduled to take place in the week commencing 3 November 2025.

Ito’s bail was enlarged.
