They’re the little – and sometimes not so little – things that can really irk us. We’ve asked the people of Geelong to point out the problems that irritate and exasperate and have us all saying, woah, that’s frustrating! And hopefully by highlighting them we can get them fixed.

EYESORE A ‘DISGRACE’

It’s a strong word, eyesore, but for this particular residence in Grovedale, perhaps it’s just an apt description.

An anonymous letter from “a nanna who loves the Cats” tipped this masthead off to the Marshalltown Rd house, which she said had “been a bomb site” for two years.

One resident described the house as a “disgrace.”
One resident described the house as a “disgrace.”

“It’s a disgrace to look at,” she said.

“Half pulled down, wire fence tipped over.

“I’ve rung our city council only to be handballed (yes they love the Cats) onto a developer.”

It’s not the first time this column has described a residence in Geelong’s south as the “E word”.

Two weeks ago we put the spotlight on a Grovedale home which had a pile of whitegoods in the front yard.

TRAFFIC TRIFECTA

It’s a Newtown nightmare traffic trifecta.

We refer to the Geelong College, Sacred Heart and St Joseph’s precinct during peak hour and school drop off/pick up.

Streets clogged with cars, trucks and buses, parents double parked while providing a taxi service and using laneways as rat runs, and vehicles in no standing zones and on corners (all day).

Courtesies like waiting your turn to pass along a street reduced to a single lane because of parked cars either side, or a friendly thank you wave mean nothing.

Tail-gating too appears mandatory as does breaking the speed barrier when it’s quiet, which is rare.

What’s the answer?

A regular witness suggests parking inspectors and police would be a good start.

BELMONT INTERSECTION ‘CONFUSES’ DRIVERS

A concerned reader is calling on something to be done about a “nightmare” intersection in Geelong’s south.

The Belmont man said he had seen a number of incidents — including near-misses and crashes — around the intersection of Kidman Ave and High St.

“Through the day it’s just constant, the service road just confuses people,” he said.

The intersection in question forces cars coming out of Kidman Ave to worry about traffic from the High St service road before hitting busy High St.

People turning right from Kidman Ave also have to contend with cars turning right off High St in the middle island.

This combined with cars “speeding” south bound on High St, causes dangerous conditions, the reader said.

Transport Victoria was contacted for comment.
