Wild weather has forced the annual Carols by the Bay event indoors.
City Hall made the announcement to move the annual tradition to Geelong Arena yesterday afternoon, citing adverse weather including heavy rains and thunderstorms.
The “Christmas Opening Night” event, hosted each year by Denis Walter, was set to be held at Steampacket Gardens on the waterfront.
In a statement on social media, City Hall said the decision was made with the community in mind.
“While this is not the ideal scenario, it ensures the community can still be part of the celebration,” the statement read.
It is the second year in a row the event has been impacted by wet weather, with the move coming after the 2023 iteration was cancelled completely.
The public event will remain free but is ticketed due to the limited capacity of the indoor venue.
A total of 860 general admission tickets and 20 accessible tickets were made available, but the allocation was quickly exhausted.
The event will be live-streamed.
The lighting of Geelong’s famous floating Christmas tree, which was scheduled to be part of the festivities, will now also take place over live stream.
The festivities will kick off at 5pm.
