A respected Geelong Indigenous man and artist is being remembered as a “warrior” and “respected” after his sad passing.

Norm Jurrawwa Stanley, 46, was a proud Kurnai, Wotjabaluk father-of-five and had spent time in the Northern Territory on country before losing his battle with kidney cancer on Wednesday.

His impact on the community is evidenced by the outpouring of tributes following his death.

Mr Stanley’s wife, Nikki, said her family’s “warrior” had “laid down his weapons and spread his wings to soar high at sun down with the first stars shining bright”.

“You have braved what many couldn’t, and you stood strong and proud til you were no longer able,” she said.

Geelong Mayor Trent Sullivan said Mr Stanley was a “beloved Kurnai/Wotjabaluk man” whose presence and contributions “had left an indelible mark on our region”.

“Norm’s talents as an artist and musician enriched our cultural understanding and brought joy to countless individuals,” he said.

“His commitment to sharing his culture and spirit resonated deeply with all who had the privilege of witnessing his performances and artworks.”

A spokesman from the Wadawurrung Traditional Owners Aboriginal Corporation said there was “pain and sadness” being felt by First Nations people.

“We recognise Norm’s huge contribution to Ceremonies, Art, Education and Culture,” the statement read.

“We say Nyatne (thank you) for everything he did. He was always well respected and valued.

“He will be dearly missed.”

The Portarlington Football Club also paid tribute to “Norm”, who had conducted the club’s Welcome to Country for many years in the annual Indigenous Round as part of the Bellarine Football Netball League.

“Norm was an incredibly special part of this day and our club,” a spokesman said.

“We will remember Norm for the contribution he has made to all of us.”

Mr Stanley was diagnosed with kidney cancer in January this year after presenting to the Geelong hospital with pain down his left side.

A GoFundMe page was established to help support his family, with the fundraiser having raised more than $46,000.
