'Important' to have both intravenous and oral COVID-19 treatment

A RESIDENT from a Belmont aged care facility has died after contracting Covid.

An outbreak emerged at The Belmont aged care facility, operated by TLC Healthcare, last month.

It’s understood a staff member tested positive and five residents were hospitalised with Covid.

Barwon Health confirmed a man in his 80s from Geelong, who was fully vaccinated, died overnight Thursday at Geelong hospital.

It is understood that man was a resident at The Belmont.

The Geelong Advertiser understands four residents have been discharged from hospital.

It comes as WorkSafe confirmed it was making inquiries following the outbreak at The Belmont.

It’s understood the authority is examining Covid protocols at the aged care facility.

The Geelong Advertiser also recently revealed the aged care watchdog was investigating the outbreak.

In a statement this week, the Aged Care Quality and Safety Commission confirmed it was aware of concerns about the quality of care and services being provided at TLC’s The Belmont.

“The commission is investigating these concerns,” it said.

On Monday, the commission conducted an on-site assessment contact at the service.

“A performance report resulting from this site visit will be published … once the report is finalised and procedural fairness processes are complete,” the commission said.

A TLC Healthcare spokeswoman said to ensure the privacy and dignity of residents, staff and contractors, TLC Healthcare would not be publicly discussing the circumstances of any individuals in its care or employment.

“TLC Healthcare has been in communication with both WorkSafe and the Aged Care Quality and Safety Commission who have not raised any concerns regarding our management of Covid-19 at The Belmont,” the spokeswoman said.

Last year, before the vaccine rollout commenced, a Highton aged care home was struck by a deadly Covid outbreak.

The coronavirus outbreak claimed the lives of eight residents at Opal South Valley, now known as Highton Gardens Care Community.
