A teenage girl accused of leading police on a high-speed chase, reaching speeds of up to 160km/h, did not front court as she couldn’t be woken up.
The 16-year-old girl has been charged with theft of motor vehicle, assault, dangerous driving while pursued by police and traffic offences after she and another girl allegedly assaulted a man, stole his car and drove across Geelong and parts of Melbourne on Wednesday night.
Police said officers responded to reports two girls had assaulted a man and stolen his white Honda Civic along the Surf Coast Highway in Armstrong Creek just before 10.30pm.
The victim, a 28-year-old Clayton man, sustained a minor injury.
One of the girls fled the scene while the other allegedly stole the man’s vehicle.
Police then spotted the allegedly stolen Honda driving from Waurn Ponds towards Altona just after midnight.
Officers on the road maintained their distance from the vehicle while the police chopper tracked it travelling from Altona to Geelong then Geelong to Fawkner.
Police allege the vehicle reached speeds of up to 160km/h.
The allegedly stolen car drove along the Princes Freeway towards Geelong then continued onto the Surf Coast Highway where police successfully deployed stop sticks.
The driver got out of the car and was arrested just before 3am.
She has also been charged with armed robbery, aggravated carjacking and drug offences for separate incidents dating back to July this year.
The girl did not front a Children’s Court on Thursday because she didn’t wake up.
When the matter was first called, the girl’s lawyer, Sarah Wood, told the court the girl couldn’t be roused.
She asked for the matter to be stood down for a few hours so the girl could “have a sleep”.
Magistrate Peter Mellas asked why she couldn’t be roused and if there was a medical reason.
When the matter returned, Ms Wood told the court she still could not get the girl to wake up, and asked for the matter to be adjourned.
No application for bail was made and the girl will reappear in Children’s Court on November 20.
