An Ocean Grove doctor who raped and sexually assaulted six patients has been jailed for 14 years and six months.

Shafiul Milky, 59, kept his head down for most of his sentencing in the Melbourne Country Court on Thursday.

The suspended GP likely faces deportation after serving his jail sentence.

Milky was found guilty by a jury of 15 charges of indecent assault, sexual assault and rape of his patients while he worked at the Ocean Grove Peninsula Family Medical Practice and with the National Home Doctor Service between September 2012 and February 2019.

County Court Judge Felicity Hampel said each of the victims had been profoundly affected by Milky’s offending.

Judge Hampel said the victims spoke of the fear and distress of potentially see him in their local area and felt shame and humiliation for not doing enough to complain about his actions.

“Three of those victims spoke about the guilt they felt for not speaking out earlier,” Judge Hampel said.

“In my view these are serious examples of serious sexual offences and have features such as breach of trust and vulnerability.”

Judge Hampel said Milky’s actions were degrading.

The court was told he would add commentary to inappropriate examinations by saying “nice” and had visible signs of an erection when he committed sexual offences.

She said there was a “power imbalance” and Milky was operating under the guise of a medical practitioner and would sexually abuse women for his own sexual gratification.

Judge Hampel said Milky clearly showed no evidence of remorse or acceptance of responsibility for his actions.

She said the victims had to relive and recount the events in court and had to deal with the embarrassment of having private details read in court.

Milky, who was born in Bangladesh and has a New Zealand citizenship, moved to the Geelong region in 2011 will likely be deported upon completion of his sentence.

He will be eligible for parole after 11 years.

Survivor Fran Millington said the trial had been traumatic and the day before Milky was sentenced, she was physically sick.

“I feel really numb,” she said following the sentencing.

Ms Millington saw Milky three times during September 2012 after she injured her ankle.

On the first two appointments, the court heard that despite Ms Millington visiting for her ankle, Milky redirected conversation to breast examinations.

On the third visit, which was to discuss blood test results, Milky touched her breast and squeezed her nipple.

He told her to remove her pants so he could feel her pulse in her groin area, and exposed her breasts and pressed a stethoscope against them.

Milky would years later be charged with four counts of indecent assault over what transpired at this appointment.

Ms Millington, who moved to the Northern Territory and was diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder in the aftermath of being abused by Milky, said the sentence was a “good punishment”.

Ms Millington, who said she tipped off a staff member at Peninsula Family Medical Practice and reported Milky to the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency and police, said it was the best outcome that the predator could not harm other women.

She said she would be even more appreciative if he gets deported.

“It still feels so unreal that all this is happening,” she said.

“Finally someone’s listened … I’m here to see the outcome and to see him be punished.

“I’m just an average woman who has spoken up.”
