Separation St, Douro St backed up as train stops for man on tracks

Traffic chaos ensued after a freight train blocked a busy North Geelong roundabout on Wednesday afternoon.

Traffic was brought to a standstill on a busy North Geelong road on Wednesday afternoon after an injured man forced a freight train to halt.

Emergency services were called to Corio Quay Rd about 12.30pm to assist the injured man, with Ambulance Victoria confirming he was taken to Geelong hospital in a stable condition.

Bell Post Hill local Jesse Holt was riding his bike to work when he heard the approximately 50-carriage long train come to a screeching halt.

He said it caused “mayhem” for drivers.

“It blocked off the Separation St and Douro St roundabout so trucks couldn’t get past … it was backed up all the way to the 7-Eleven on Thompson Rd,” he said.

Mr Holt said the congestion lasted up to 90 minutes while emergency services worked to safely remove the man from the tracks.

The train was carrying grain and headed for Geelong Port.
