A man who was taken to hospital after drinking half a bottle of bleach then stabbed a police officer with a pair of scissors, a court heard.

Robert David Wilson, of Belmont, was “very erratic and at times not making much sense” when police were called to a house he was at on May 4 this year.

The Geelong Magistrates Court on Monday heard the 43-year-old drank the bleach in place of alcohol.

Wilson was arrested under the mental health act about 12.20pm and taken to Geelong hospital’s emergency department.

About half-an-hour after he was admitted to hospital, Wilson walked out of a room and stabbed a police officer in the chest with a pair of stolen scissors, the court heard.

Police prosecutor Leading Senior Constable Georgie Hadzig said the officer was wearing a protective vest and didn’t sustain any serious injuries but was “traumatised from the incident”.

Wilson pleaded guilty in court to reckless conduct endangering serious injury, assaulting an emergency worker, theft as well reckless driving.

Wilson’s lawyer, Matilda Jones said her client had starting using methamphetamine in January this year and as a result “his life slowly spiralled out of control”.

She also he struggled with mental illness.

In relation to the driving matters, Wilson was seen driving erratically on a number of occasions on April 28 this year.

“The vehicle was on the wrong side of the road, did not have headlights on and was doing burnouts,” Ms Hadzig said.

The court was told Wilson had also been driving on the wrong side of the road in Mercer St and Gheringhap St and nearly collided with vehicles.

Magistrate Franz Holzer said the attack on the officer appeared to be targeted to evoke some kind of response.

Wilson, who has spent 123 days in custody, was suspended from driving for 18 months and will be sentenced on September 11 in regards to the assault on the officer.
