The search for a fisherman who went missing near Lorne three days ago has been put on hold because of weather conditions, with police divers preparing to take to the water.

The chances of finding a missing fisherman near Lorne appear to be very slim, after police confirmed that they would not be searching the water on Sunday due to weather conditions.

A police spokeswoman on Sunday confirmed that there was no update on the hunt for the man, who went missing on Thursday.

“The search finished yesterday (Saturday) and due to weather conditions there will be no search today,” she said.

“The search will recommence once weather conditions are okay for the Water Police divers to enter the water.”

Police officers and other emergency service crews spent Friday and Saturday trying to locate the man, who ran into trouble in the surf near Separation Creek about 2pm on Thursday.

Witnesses attempted to save the man, but sadly lost sight of him.

The search involved water, aerial and ground crews.

As of Sunday, police said they did not have an age or a suburb for the man who was missing.

On Saturday Lorne SES said they had been hindered by wild weather.

One user on Facebook commented that he tried to help the man and said the incident could have been avoided if there was a sign saying “check swell”.

It’s understood the man may have been spearfishing and had a snorkel on.

The area at Separation Creek is located about 20 minutes southwest of the popular holiday town of Lorne and is very close to Wye River.

In 2015 a 20-year-old man died after being pulled unconscious from waters at Separation Creek where he had been snorkelling with a group of men.

Anyone who witnessed the incident or has information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential report online at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au.
