Truck on wrong side of highway

The driver of a stolen truck that was filmed hurtling down the wrong side of the Bellarine Highway on Tuesday morning, narrowly avoiding oncoming cars, has been arrested following a dramatic police chase.

Officers were alerted after the truck was seen travelling erratically in the St Albans Park area around 8am.

Witnesses said the driver – a 28-year-old man – came close to hitting members of the public as he drove dangerously through the area.

Adelaide businessman Phil, who did not want his surname published, was in Geelong for work when his car was almost struck by the van as it violently swerved to the wrong side of the Bellarine Highway.

“It scared the crap out of me how close it was and how crazy he was driving,” he said.

With the assistance of the police helicopter, officers followed the allegedly stolen white truck through Thomson, Newcomb, Leopold and Moolap.

The driver, who repeatedly travelled on the wrong side of the road, evaded police when they attempted to intercept the vehicle in Thomson.

He continued driving dangerously before road spikes were successfully deployed by police, on both Boundary Rd in Newcomb and Portarlington Rd.

Before coming to a stop, the vehicle hit multiple parked cars causing significant damage, including to an unmarked police vehicle.

The driver was swiftly arrested, while no one was injured during the incident.

Clint, who did not want his surname published, witnessed the truck careering down the wrong side of the Bellarine Highway.

“I heard cop cars coming from behind me, next I heard this scraping noise,” he said.

Anyone who witnessed the collision or has dashcam footage is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
