Wine lovers on the Bellarine may have to add another stop to their tours, as plans have been lodged with the City of Greater Geelong to open a “modest” wine cellar door and tasting room in Curlewis.

The proposal would allow customers to taste wine produced by a vineyard already established at the 11.7ha McDermott Rd property.

The land is owned by Henley Ridge Pty Ltd, which has also applied to use signage at the property’s gateway.

The proposed tasting room would be “modest in scale” and facilitate just 12 patrons on site at any one time.

“The cellar door/tasting room will be ancillary to the primary use of the land for a vineyard and wine production and is proposed only to allow patrons to taste wines produced on the site,” planning documents said.

The bid comes after the Bellarine Estate in July announced plans for a $50,000 facelift in a bid to boost its popularity.

The property is next door to another small-batch winery, BAIE Wines.

Under the plans, the exterior of a outbuilding at the property would undergo “minor” works, including alternations to “allow patrons to access an outdoor alfresco area”.

Remaining works would all be internal, planning documents said.

According to the planning documents, the room proposed operating times would be between 10am and 5pm, Monday to Saturday and no music would be played on site.

The plans will be open for public feedback until August 27.
