Shocked neighbours have watched on in horror as a Corio house went up in flames, with a man flown to a Melbourne hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Emergency services were called to a single-storey brick home in Vermont Ave just before 12pm on Thursday after reports of a fire.

Victoria Police spokeswoman Leading Senior Constable Kendra Jackson said a 29-year-old resident suffered life-threatening injuries.

A spokeswoman from The Alfred said the man was in a critical condition.

It’s believed he has suffered severe burns.

Neighbours told the Geelong Advertiser they noticed smoke billowing from the house before it engulfed the entire street.

The front room of the residential property was gutted and blackened and two trees in the driveway were burnt.

One resident said they saw the badly burned victim on the footpath.

“I thought he was dead,” he said.

Vermont St was cordoned off by police tape until about 1.30pm.

Another resident, who called emergency services, said the incident and police presence made her feel “pretty unsafe”

“It’s close to my area but you don’t know if it’s been deliberately lit or not,” she said.

Constable Jackson said the area had been cordoned off and a crime scene established.

“The circumstances surrounding the fire are not being treated as suspicious,” she said.

Anyone who witnessed the incident or with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
