A Charlemont family has revealed their “miracle” girl’s “devastating” diagnosis after lengthy battle with illness.

Mikey and Maria Todorovic’s received the devastating news recently that their daughter’s illness was terminally.

The pair welcomed their daughter Sofia in October 2020.

Mr Todorovic said Sofia had “faced more challenges in her four years than most of us will ever know”.

“Diagnosed at birth with skeletal dysplasia, she later developed a serious spinal condition that required her to wear a neck brace,” Mr Todorovic said.

“At three years old, she was diagnosed with autism, making her non-verbal.

Last November, the family’s world was again turned on its head.

“Our world shifted again when Sofia was diagnosed with pulmonary hypertension and lung disease,” Mr Todorovic said.

“She now depends on oxygen 24/7, making it difficult for her to participate in the social activities she loves so much.”

The news only got worse recently.

“We received devastating news, doctors have told us that her condition is worsening and that our time with our little girl may be limited to a few months or, if we’re lucky, a year,” he said.

“It felt like our life ended that day, we’ve been getting bad news ever since Sofia was born, so we’re just not the same people, it destroys you every time.”

But the family is refusing to give up hope, Mr Todorovic said he spends all of his time searching for a way to make Sofia better.

“We’re hoping that we’re wasting our time with this, we’re hoping that the doctors have got it wrong,” he said.

“It’s a full time job, if we are doing anything else we are thinking of Sofia.

“I’ve been in contact with doctors from around the world, in America, naturopaths.

“Our faith in god has given us a lot of strength, and I said to myself ‘while she’s alive, always have faith’.

“We’re just trying to stay positive, because she can feel our energy.”

Sofia has spent long stints at the Royal Children’s hospital in Melbourne, where Mr Todorovic said the staff have been “incredible”.

“The specialists have just been absolutely amazing, they feel like part of the family,” he said.

“We have to thank the Sugar Glider Wing of the hospital, they’ve been so loving.”

A GoFundMe has been set up to support the family, with almost $20k raised already to help with daily expenses, exploring treatments and creating memories.

“I feel guilty,” Mr Todorovic said.

“I’ve always been good at giving help, but I haven’t been good at receiving it.

“We’re so moved, it just shows how many people love her.

“It gives you faith in humanity.”
