A man allegedly bit a police officer while being arrested after a brawl at a sporting function on Saturday.

Victoria Police said officers responded to an affray involving a group of people on Swinburne St, North Geelong about 7pm.

It’s understood the incident occurred outside North Geelong Football Netball Club.

It is alleged a 63-year-old Lara man physically assaulted a 42-year-old woman, and officers arrested him about 7.30pm.

He has been charged with aggravated assault of a female, unlawful assault, assault in company, resist police and affray.

The woman was transported to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

A second Lara man, 36, attempted to flee the scene on foot before he allegedly bit a police member during his arrest.

He was taken to hospital and released from police custody pending summons.

Victoria Police expect the man will be charged for assault, affray, assaulting police and jail offences.

The 63-year-old man was bailed to appear at the Geelong Magistrates Court on June 12.

North Geelong Football Netball Club president Darren Vandenberg said the men were not connected to the club.

“We implemented RSA guidelines as we believed they were intoxicated and were happy to give them water for free,” he said.

Mr Vandenberg said a short time later the two men were asked to leave the premises and the club did what it could to keep people safe.

“We are a family-orientated club,” he said.

“We were getting ready for a club function, our season opener, so there were plenty of kids around.”
