A man shot in Norlane and left fighting for life in a Melbourne hospital has been identified.
Lee Deacon-Stock remains in a critical but stable condition at the Alfred Hospital after he was shot at Evans Reserve on November 16.
Detectives from the Armed Crimes Squad believe the 47-year-old, who is understood to be homeless, laid on the oval for about 30 minutes before he got up and went to a nearby home to seek help.
He told a woman inside he had “been shot” and “needed help” before she called triple-0.
But Mr Deacon-Stock then left the home and went to a payphone out the front of a bottle shop on Alkira Ave, where he also called triple-0.
The following morning, forensic officers were examining evidence taken from a wooden seat which is next to the payphone.
A neighbour who knew of the victim said he was known as “Stocky” and is a father.
It’s understood Mr Deacon-Stock has been previously charged with drug and firearms offences and sentenced to multiple community corrections orders.
In April this year, he was charged with possessing methamphetamine, cannabis and a controlled weapon.
He was also charged with trafficking methamphetamine and 1,4 Butanediol, two counts of driving while suspended and failing to answer bail in 2021.
Mr Deacon-Stock faced 20 charges in 2019 including possessing methamphetamine, ecstasy and prohibited and controlled weapons.
CCTV from the area has been gathered and reviewed by police as part of the probe.
Detective Acting Senior Sergeant Ross Adams said the footage shows a number of people were on foot and bikes in the area around the time of the shooting.
“We’re really keen to speak to those people – even as witnesses,” he said.
“There might be something you noticed that night that seemed unusual, or even something you think might be inconsequential.”
Detective Acting Senior Sergeant Adams said the “reckless” use of a fireman has left the victim with “potentially life changing injuries”.
“We are keen to speak to anyone who has knowledge of who was involved and what the motivation for the shooting might have been,” he said.
