Kaine Bender denied bail on child sex assault, giving drugs to kids charges

A Corio man has fronted court for allegedly sexually assaulting a child and handing out drugs to minors.

A Corio man who allegedly gave drugs to kids and allegedly sexually assaulted a child has been denied bail.

Kaine Bender, 35, was on bail when it’s alleged he gave cannabis to children on June 29.

Mr Bender, who has an acquired brain injury, is also charged with the sexual penetration of a child under 16 years old, sexual assault of a child, and making threats to kill on July 8.

Police prosecutor Denise Frame told the Geelong Magistrates’ Court the alleged conduct was the “most serious end of offending.”

Senior Constable Frame told the court appropriate support for Mr Bender was not available in the community at the time of the bail application on Monday.

“Members of the community are in danger without Mr Bender receiving the support he needs,” Sen-Constable Frame said.

She said there were no bail conditions that would ameliorate the risk Mr Bender posed.

The court was told Mr Bender had the promise of just one night of accommodation if he was bailed, and that his aunty was not prepared for him to live at her home in Melbourne’s outer suburbs.

Magistrate Ann McGarvie, who denied bail, said the time Mr Bender could potentially spend on remand was not unacceptable given the seriousness of the charges.

“I cannot be satisfied that any (bail) conditions in the current circumstances would reduce the risk of reoffending,” Ms McGarvie said.

The Geelong Advertiser requested information about the circumstances of Mr Bender’s alleged offending but Magistrate McGarvie did not release details.

Mr Bender is due to face court again in January.
