Iona College Geelong has taken an unexpected place among the region’s top schools, finishing the year with the equal highest median VCE study score a year before it has even welcomed year 12s onto the campus.

Of the Charlemont college’s 49 year 11 students completing a ¾ subject, the median study score was 33, with 6.1 per cent of students scoring above 40.

Deputy principal of learning Melissa Gould said the results were not surprising, but a real testament to the hard work of both students and teachers.

“Establishing a new school is really hard work, and this is a fantastic reward to all our staff,” Ms Gould said.

“We’re very proud of the achievements of our students.”

This was the first time the school participated in Victorian Curriculum And Assessment Authority (VCAA) exams, as the campus prepares to become a full year 7 to 12 school as of 2025.

“(These exams) were a huge part of our journey, and it feels really good to have that final part of the puzzle fall into place,” Ms Gould said.

“It is an incredible learning curve and brings into fruition for us to become a full school.”

Last year’s winner Geelong College once again came out on top, keeping its top spot median score of 33, alongside 14.5 per cent of study scores above 40.

Principal Dr Peter Miller said the VCE results were cause for celebration.

“Our 180 VCE students have excelled, and demonstrated exceptional dedication, resilience and passion in everything they have done,” he said.

“From their studies to their achievements on stage and the sports field, in debating and in

community service, it is wonderful to see our highest achievers have availed themselves of a

broad range of opportunities over their time at the college.”

Kardinia and Geelong Grammar followed close behind, both with a 32 median study score.

Kardinia overtook Grammar in its percentage of study scores above 40, with 12.6 per cent.

Geelong Grammar, which charges $49,750 for year 12 school fees, managed to achieve 8.7 per cent of study scores above 40.

Apollo Bay P-12 College was the highest scoring state school, with a median of 30, and 10.7 per cent of study scores above 40, with Bellarine Secondary College coming in as the next public school with 4.9 per cent of study scores above 40 and a 28 median study score.
