‘Great memories’: Analogue Academy announces closure

One of the CBD’s most creative spaces has announced its closure after eight years in business.

Analogue Academy cafe and gallery in Central Geelong is closing its doors.

A unique CBD offering will bid patrons goodbye in coming weeks.

Analogue Academy – which combines a cafe, gallery and photo lab in Couzens Place – announced it would shut up shop in March.

The creative space was the brainchild of Joshua Maxwell De Hoog, James Cox and Danny Horvat, and has been running since 2015.

Mr Cox said the group had decided to collectively try other adventures after some confusion over a lease renewal.

“We just collectively decided to move on,” he said.

“It’s nice that we were able to end on our own terms.”

A special gathering on March 18 starting at 7pm is open to “all who this place meant something to”.

“We had a lot of fun building the business,” Mr Cox said.

“At the beginning everything developed slowly, initially it was just a coffee machine and our film developing equipment, then we got our liquor licence and were able to start hosting some cool events.”

He thanked long standing staff members and regular customers for their dedication over the years.

“We hope we’ve been a space of joy for all those who have visited regularly or on occasion,” a Facebook post announcing the cafe’s closure read.

“We feel so lucky to call our customers friends, or dare I say it: family.”

Patrons took to the cafe’s social media pages to post their best memories and wish the group well in the future.

“So many great memories – top quality banter – great coffee and sooooo many laughs – a sanctuary and a safe place, it was the people that drew me there time and time again,” one patron wrote.

“All the best with all your endeavours. Hope to see you all in your new adventures.”

Another thanked owners and staff for “being brave enough to bring a bit of retro hip to that little lane”.

“You are all so brilliant. Thank you so much for all you’ve done,” added another.
