Hundreds of Geelong and Surf Coast students have topped the state’s VCE results, achieving study scores of 40 or above across multiple subjects.

Of the Greater Geelong and Surf Coast students who gave permission for their results to be published, more than 500 received at least one study score of 40 or above.

Across the region, at least 14 students received perfect scores of 50, and 12 study scores of 49 were handed out.

Cate and Sophie Robson are more than just biological twins.

The pair – from The Geelong College – also both received perfect 50 scores together in Psychology.

The pair, who boarded at the Geelong school, opened their ATARs on Thursday while on their regular morning walk near their home in Warrnambool.

Cate scored an ATAR of 99.35, closely followed by Sophie with 99.3.

Cate said the moment was tense.

“Sophie saw her ATAR first, so I knew that’s what I had to beat,” she said.

“I would have liked to get the same, but with the same subjects it was almost impossible.

“We ended up so close, with me just ahead.”

But Cate said she couldn’t have done it without her sister.

“The competition between us was a big driver,” she said.

Sophie was also delighted with her result.

“I just wanted to get over 99, I didn’t have a specific number beyond that,” she said.

She credited her teachers, parents and friends for their support.

Both sisters aim to study Medicine at Monash University next year.

Geelong’s highest scoring students were The Geelong College’s Joseph “Jo” Afford and Geelong High School’s Mattias “Matt” Aidt, who got matching ATARs of 99.8.

The Geelong College had the highest number of unique students with a study score of 40 or above, with at least 87 students reaching that mark.

The Geelong College principal Simon Young said the school was enormously proud of all its students, not just those who had achieved high ATARs.

“My message to the students is they’re not the finished product in VCE,” he said.

“This is just the foundations from which they can launch.

“We certainly would like to celebrate this success, but we also want to reinforce that the ATAR is not who you are.”
