Results are in.

After 13 years of schooling thousands of Geelong students received their Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) scores on Thursday morning.

Newtown twins Daisy and Edward ‘Ted’ Bain from The Geelong College received identical scores of 96.55.

“He thought he’d beat me at first,” Ms Bain said.

“We’re a little bit competitive, so it’s probably for the better that we got the same ATAR.”

For Ms Bain, she said it was a relief to know she could get into her preferred Engineering Science degree at Monash.

For Ted, he said he just wanted to get a better score than his sister.

“I am five minutes younger, but I studied a lot more I think,” he said.

“She did very well and we’re both pretty happy today.”

On Thursday morning, Victorian Deputy Premier and Education Minister Ben Carroll congratulated the state’s 61,998 students graduating this year with their VCE.

“Congratulations to every student – you should be proud of everything you’ve already achieved as you move to the next exciting step, whether it be further study, training, the workforce or a gap year,” Mr Carroll said.

This year’s VCE completion rate is 97.4 per cent, with more than 22,700 VCE graduates receiving a subject study score of 40 or higher, and more than 680 receiving the maximum study score of 50.

Mr Carroll on Wednesday said he believed students would be pleasantly surprised at how their hard work has paid off, despite admitting 40 exams were not sufficiently changed, even after the leaks were discovered.

“Students can have every confidence that these results are fair, accurate and will reflect their hard work, but if any student does want to review their grade they are able to do that,” he said.

Students with questions about their results can call the Post Results and ATAR Service on 9637 3877 or 1800 653 080.

Deakin University school of education lecturer Dr Kellie Tobin said all the 2024 graduates should be celebrating today, regardless of their ATAR.

“There might be joy, surprise, relief, disappointment,” Dr Tobin said.

“But regardless of where you fall in that realm, it’s about keeping the ATAR in perspective.”

She said the ATAR was ultimately a tool to determine entry into university study, so some students would be rethinking their future plans today.

“The next step is to strategise what the future will look like,” she said.
