Residents not picking up dog poop and not letting drivers merge in traffic has led to Geelong being named one of the rudest cities in Australia.

A recent survey from online learning platform, Preply, ranked Geelong seventh out of 22 cities, with a rudeness score of 5.49.

The national average was 5.31.

The top rudest behaviours of Geelong residents included not letting people merge in traffic, being absorbed in their phones in public and not picking up after their dog.

Queensland cities dominated the list with Bundaberg ranked the rudest city in Australia with a score of 5.81, followed by Rockhampton (5.79) and Brisbane (5.58).

Preply cultural director Amy Pritchett said more than 1500 residents from 22 of the largest metropolitan areas in Australia were surveyed.

“(We) asked them about the rudeness level of their city, including the prominence of certain typically rude behaviours, to help travellers determine what to expect when visiting,” she said.

Participants were asked to rate the rudeness of the average resident in their city on a scale of one to ten, where one is extremely polite and ten is extremely rude.

They were also surveyed about typically rude behaviours such as being on the phone when paying for groceries, not giving a thank you wave when a car lets you merge into their lane and not standing on the left of the escalator to let people behind you through.

“Neglecting to offer a guest a drink or something to eat at home was the least voted rude behaviour, highlighting the importance of hospitality in the culture,” Ms Pritchett said.

The survey also found that tourists visiting Geelong are more rude than those who live in the region.

Sunshine Coast was ranked the most polite city in the country with a score of 4.58, followed by Hobart (4.71) and Melton in Melbourne’s west (4.77).
