Gary Bulmer fronts court, accused of Pako baseball bat attack

Details have been revealed about a Norlane man accused of wielding a homemade firearm and a baseball bat in a Pakington St incident, as he fronted court for the first time.

A man accused of threatening children and wielding a homemade gun and a baseball bat on Pakington St has fronted court.

Gary Bulmer, 31, fronted the Geelong Magistrates Court on Thursday, charged with a number of firearm, weapons and assault offences stemming from a series of incidents in Newtown on Wednesday afternoon.

The Norlane man sat quietly during the short hearing.

His lawyer, Tom Edwards, told the court his client was not making an application for bail.

Police earlier alleged several calls were made to emergency services by members of the public and business owners on Pakington St after the man armed with a baseball bat “appeared erratic” and was yelling at cars and bystanders.

“It is believed the armed man approached two primary school aged children and a woman in an allegedly threatening manner,” Sergeant Julie-Anne Newman said.

Sergeant Newman said the man was arrested a short time later.

“Responding police located and arrested the man and seized a baseball bat, quantity of ammunition, alleged methylamphetamine and what appeared to be a homemade firearm,” Sergeant Newman said.

He was charged with prohibited person possess firearm, possess unregistered general category handgun, possess ammunition, possess methylamphetamine, two counts of possess a controlled weapon and unlawful assault of a woman and child under 14-years.

There were several custody management issues in Mr Bulmer’s case, Mr Edwards told the court, including self-harm risk and “undiagnosed mental health issues”.

The court heard it was Mr Bulmer’s first time in custody.

Magistrate John Lesser adjourned a media request for access to CCTV footage and documents, noting it was “too early” at this stage.

Mr Bulmer was remanded in custody and will reappear in court on September 5.
