Cat and dog owners have the chance to save on fees for their furry friends as Geelong council offers a free pet registration amnesty.
The amnesty started last Monday and runs until December 15.
The city is offering free pet registration for eligible Geelong cat and dog owners, waiving the usual $46 price tag for dogs and $35 for cats.
There is no limit on the number of pets you can register – they just have to be microchipped.
Ocean Grove pooch Remy was registered earlier this year.
Eleanor Cook, 13, chose the Nova Scotia duck tolling retriever for his playful personality.
“I did a quiz and it comes up with what dog breed you should get,” she said.
“He’s so fun.”
She said she’d be devastated if he ran off, but was happy they got him chipped and registered to keep him close to home.
City of Greater Geelong chief executive Ali Wastie said registration allowed council to reunite lost pets with their owners.
Ms Wastie said registering pets could also avoid the financial and emotional burden of impoundment.
“Registration proceeds also help to fund animal-related projects across our municipality, such as the building of dog parks and support services provided by (the Geelong Animal Welfare Society),” she said.
Interested pet owners can visit the “Pets” page on geelongaustralia.com.au and click the “Register a new pet” tab or head to one of the city’s customer service centres to be registered in person.
Registering your cat or dog with council is a legal requirement as outlined by the Domestic Animals Act.
Failing to register your pet can result in a fine of $395 per animal.
The free registration is for pets who are already microchipped, but will need to be renewed each year and paid for by April 10.
