A small Otways town has been left reeling after the death of a “a real character” and “old school country boy” in a tragic car accident.

Father-of-two Danny Hunt, 49, has been identified as the victim of a fatal crash in Forrest on Tuesday evening, with his loss devastating the community.

Mr Hunt was born and raised in the small inland village, about 40 minutes from Apollo Bay and Lorne.

He is being remembered for his kind heart and larger-than-life personality.

“It has been a pretty big shock,” one friend said, who did not want to be named.

“He was a very good friend to me and many others and we are all just devastated.

“He was the most magnificent man and a tremendous father.”

Mr Hunt, who spent most of his working life in the logging and timber industry, was found dead near the southern edge of town after his car veered off Rivendell Lane.

Owner of Forrest Brewing Company, Matt Bradshaw, said Mr Hunt had been “a stalwart of Forrest”.

“He was old Forrest meets new Forrest,” he said.

“He was willing to help anyone and helped me plenty of times.

“His family is very well known and respected in the town.”

Known for his love of the outdoors – hunting, fishing and motorbike riding – Mr Hunt was an adored father of two young children and the beloved husband of Anna.

Their property backed onto bushland and overlooked the Otways Ranges township.

“One of his favourite things to do was go bush and stargaze with his son and daughter,” another friend said.

“He was a cheeky man, a great person who will be missed by so many.

“It will leave a big hole in the community.”

Mr Hunt is survived by his wife and children, his mother, Karen, and siblings.

Funeral arrangements will be made in due course.
