Firefighting crews battle Fyansford blaze in third Geelong house fire in less than 24 hours

A Fyansford home has been destroyed by fire hours after two other houses in Geelong went up in smoke.

A house fire in Fyansford on Tuesday afternoon is being treated as suspicious.

It was the third home to erupt in flames in Geelong since midnight.

A Victoria Police spokeswoman said the house was believed to be vacant and was destroyed by the blaze.

“The fire is being treated as suspicious,” she said.

On Tuesday afternoon a CFA spokesman said crews responded to reports of the fire just before 3.30pm on Duncan St in Fyansford.

“Three CFA units from Geelong and Geelong West attended the scene alongside FRV and Victoria Police,” he said.

“Crews arrived to find a 15m by 20m abandoned building well alight and began work to contain the situation.

“The incident was deemed under control at 4:20pm.”

A “stay informed” message was issued for nearby residents but officials advised there was no immediate threat to the community.

Drivers and residents near the Geelong Ring Rd and Hamilton Highway may see or smell smoke.

Fyansford house fire

The fire came after a man was arrested and released pending further inquiries following a suspicious blaze at a North Geelong unit on Tuesday morning.

Emergency services were called to a two-storey unit on Coxon Pde about 2.15am and crews found the home “well alight”.

Earlier in the night, emergency services were called to a blaze on Thrush St in Norlane about 12.30am.

It’s understood no one was inside at the time of the fire but the property was damaged.

Northern Bay College’s Hendy St campus was closed on Tuesday after a fire damaged large parts of the school just after midnight.

A 13-year-old girl is expected to be charged on summons after being arrested and released regarding the incident.

People are advised to call Nurse On Call on 1300 606 024 if they need medical advice for smoke exposure.

Anyone experiencing wheezing, chest tightness and difficulty breathing should contact triple-0.
